Sydney Swans lock-in free agent Isaac Heeney with massive contract

Star forward Isaac Heeney has taken himself off the free agency table after signing a new six-year deal with the Sydney Swans.

Heeney loomed as one of the AFL’s hottest free agents this year, but he has gone all-in with the Swans after re-signing with the club until the end of 2028.

The 25-year-old is determined to lead Sydney to grand-final glory after experiencing the pain of falling short in 2016.

“I’m over the moon, this is a club that is very special to me,” Heeney said.

“It’s the club I grew up barracking for and to be a one-club player here at the Sydney Swans is incredibly humbling and extremely exciting.

“Over the next six years that is my biggest goal.”

Heeney credited his family and coach John Longmire for his longevity at the club.

“My family have played a huge role in my success, they’ve put a lot of time and effort in to get me to training in Sydney from Newcastle, driving me two-and-a-half hours each way twice a week,” he said.

“Horse (John Longmire) has always backed me in and allowed me to play my game, play off instinct and not overthink things too much, and I can’t thank him enough.”

Heeney booted a career-best 36 goals from 21 games last year, and Longmire wants to give his star charge more time in the midfield in 2022.
